Living in Jambes
Across the Meuse, facing the Citadel: a former municipality of Namur, flat along the river, with two stations, a Thursday market, and the Enjambée footbridge to reach the centre on foot or by bike.
The neighbourhood
Jambes was a municipality in its own right until the 1977 merger: it has kept a real life of its own, on the right bank of the Meuse. The neighbourhood houses the presidency of the Walloon government, at the Élysette, several regional administrations, and a fabric of shops around avenue Materne and avenue Bovesse. It is flat along the river and rises gently to the east.
The market is held on Thursday mornings, on avenues Materne and Bovesse and on place de la Wallonie and place de la Patinoire. On both sides of the bridge, the Sunday flea market is a local institution.
Getting around
- On foot or by bike, two crossings lead to the centre: the Jambes bridge and the Enjambée, the footbridge opened in 2020 that comes out at the Confluence. Allow just under half an hour on foot to the university or the station.
- The train stops at two stations: Jambes, five minutes from Namur on the Dinant line, and Jambes-Est, a halt on the Luxembourg line.
- Buses A, 1, 2 and 9 cross the neighbourhood, towards the centre, Saint-Marc, Saint-Servais, Belgrade or Flawinne, until about 10 pm.
- By bike, a Li Bia Vélo station is at the Jambes bridge, and towpaths follow the Meuse.
Schools nearby
There is no higher education institution in Jambes itself. The university and the colleges in the centre are half an hour away on foot, or a few minutes by bus. For Salzinnes, it takes longer: better to check the trip before moving in.
Everyday life
The Jambes swimming pool, on rue d'Enhaive, reopened in 2025 after two years of closure. Jambes also has its own municipal library, and its local shops save you crossing the bridge for groceries.
Housing
Kots remain the first choice, but the mix is more open than in the centre, with studios, rooms in the owner's home and a few flats and flatshares. The choice is still more limited than in the Corbeille or Salzinnes.
Usual rent: €360 to 500 a month, without charges
See the housing in this neighbourhoodFor whom?
A good choice if you want a level, residential neighbourhood, if you take the train towards Dinant or Luxembourg, or if you want to live within walking distance of the centre without its bustle.
Less suited if you have classes in Salzinnes or go out late in the city centre: the walk home is long, and there is no regular night bus.
